ASSASSIN'S CREED VALHALLA
Ubisoft Entertainment (2020)
When creating these concepts, there was little visual history that we could refer to as reference for the Viking Age in 800 CE  giving us the creative liberty to imagine life as the people in this era could have lived, and emphasize parts of the culture that we thought were interesting that could also provide entertainment value.

Out of many of the thumbnails and sketches I provided these are some of the chosen thumbnails that the team decided to go further with.
These were a few ideas on composition and elements I worked with for the following final image.

I originally intended this to be a violent raid of ships going towards the coast and vikings going toward their destination. Instead, the art director wanted a more calm and composed landing, as if the vikings had nothing to be worried about.
There were questions of how the vikings could have settled and lived after conquering territory, how they traded and mingled with the existing cultures in the region, how went about transportation, the trade between regions within and outside their territories, and of course, how they interacted with rich and lush nature of the region and lived through the seasons.

All of these factors influenced the way we designed these locations and ideas that could potentially influence gameplay.

I was provided with mood boards and reference to create blue sky concepts of large, epic locations to tiny places early in the production of the game with the goal of making a living world that feels like it could have existed.
